Kitchen Porter/ Assistant

As a kitchen assistant in a school your role is to assist the kitchen team prepare the food, and clean the kitchen areas and utensils.

Your day-to-day duties may involve:
• clearing and cleaning the kitchen surfaces
• food preparation
• disposing of food waste

The kitchen assistant has the important role of supporting the chefs and cooks perform their day-to-day tasks. You you will ensure that the kitchen and cafeteria has adequate supplies of clean equipment, and you must also complete cleaning duties.

The kitchen assistant must adhere to strict health and safety procedures by using cleaning materials correctly and assessing hygiene standards. Occasionally the kitchen porter will help the chefs prepare the food. Good listening and communication skills are vital as the kitchen porter will follow instructions from every team member in the kitchen and cafeteria.
